Thanks for this awesome website.
I'm looking for a color (mandatory) printer to recommend to my mother.
I don't really have a strong opinion on laser vs inkjet (though I know the difference).
Here are some of the requirements:

Budget: 500€ absolute maximum
Country: Belgium
Color or black and white: Colour
Laser or ink printer: Whichever is more reliable and cheaper over a few years
New or used: New
Multi-function: Scan with ADF necessary, Copy nice to have, Fax not needed
Duplex: printing mandatory, scanning if possible
Home or business: Home
Printing content: Standard A4 paper, mostly text with sometimes color (like charts) but print quality is not very important, very few colored photos
Printing frequency: 50-100 pages a month
Pages per minute: Don't care
Page size: A4
Device printing from: PC
Connection type: USB, wifi or ethernet is a nice to have

I've been looking at:
- Ink tank printers like: Epson Ecotank ET-4750 or Canon G7050
- Color laser printers like: Brother MFC-L3770CDW or Canon i-Sensys MF742Cdw or HP Color Laserjet Pro MFP M479fdw

Ideally, I would like to find a printer that will last a long time, and that is not too complicated to repair myself in case of breakdown (meaning spare parts available and no irrepairable part).

Bonjour Hervé,

except from the Pixma, you get a 3-year guarantee on all devices (after registration). The laser printers are more likely to be able to easily fix mechanical errors (roles). With electronics errors you can hardly do anything anyway.

A laser printer is likely to be more reliable in the long run, but also significantly more expensive to maintain. It also depends on what you want to use for a toner.

However, according to your requirements, I cannot see (from the performance perspective) that you absolutely need a laser.

From my point of view, the Epson Ecotank ET-4750 is a very good choice - especially if you print more than planned. Compared to the Pixma, it has better operation (touchscreen) and better (black) ink and the guarantee.

If I go with a laser I'd probably choose HP like HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479dw for the overall durability, spare parts availability (I couldn't find spare parts shops for other brands...) and reliability. So HP toner (expensive).

But in the end, for my case with the limited amount of pages I'm printing, what matters is the overall cost. And the overall cost of an Epson Ecotank ET-4750 seems soo good in comparison that I think buying a laser printer can't be justified.
So Epson Ecotank ET-4750 it is then.

spare parts can generally be obtained for many manufacturers. But also at HP, some wear parts are grouped together, which means that they are time-consuming and expensive to replace. As an HP alternative, there is still the almost identical Canon i-Sensys MF742Cdw - which is a little cheaper for toner.
