Comparison of Technologies Ink versus Laser: Cost of Print

We do not count on information given by manufacturers. Our lab checks the cost of print by using standardized documents. A complete set of ink cartridges / a toner cartridge is used until empty or the printer refuses to continue printing. The lab uses the test document dc_leerdruck_5p.pdf (a page of text with 5% coverage). The document may be downloaded for private use.

For our tests consumables with high yield are used.

The lab prints as many dc_leerdruck_5p.pdf-pages, until the black ink cartridge / toner cartridge is empty. Yield and costs of consumables (MSRP) result in price per printed sheet.

For this calculation DC assumes 25.000 printed pages of text in a printer´s life cycle as a basis.

HP´s print head is mentioned in the table below. Since it´s life cycle ends after 40.000 pages it is omitted in our computations, because calculation basis are 25.000 prints.

Yield

HP offers black ink cartridges in different sizes. The lab uses the "XL cartridge". Brother also has black toner in two sizes, we use the one with the high yield.

The chart below shows that Brother´s HL-2150N can print 43 percent more than HP´s printer. That means less interventions for the operator. But you have to exchange the imaging drum after 12.000 prints and clean the corona wire. The print head of HP´s printer needs not to be exchanged during the printer´s life cycle.
