Comparison of Technologies Ink versus Laser: Print speed
Print speed is an important criterion for printers of this category. Above all a printout of a single sheet should be swift. But extensive print jobs, for example a manual, should be handled speedily as well.

The most common job for consumer printers is to print a single page. That´s why the time this takes is particularly important.
HP´s Officejet Pro 8000 needs 12 seconds for a single sheet, Brother´s HL-2150N 11 seconds – both good results.

Copy mode
In copy mode the lab sends one page (Dr. Grauert, ISO 10561) to the printers, to be copied eleven times. Time is taken after the first page is out, metering stops after the last page is printed.
This test provides information about print speed in an ideal case.
Both candidates print 21 pages per minute in this mode. A good result.

Big print jobs
For a test of the printers´capacities to do big print jobs in black our lab uses a 100 page PDF file. Print is done on normal copy paper. HP prints in "Black only" mode (black ink only), Brother prints in "Normal" mode.
In this test Brother´s printer is 23 percent faster than HP´s.

Print speed duplex print
Brother´s monolaser hasn´t got a duplex unit. If you want to print on both sides of a sheet, you have to turn it manually. HP´s Officejet can turn the sheet automatically with it´s built in duplex unit. Due to ink technology the Officejet needs about 10 seconds drying time, before it can start printing on the backside. The picture shows the Officejet´s backside with disassembled duplex unit.
