Tracking dots/Machine identifier code

von
Hi,

In my country whistleblowers are slaugthered. Now I am not a whistleblower in the real sense but I like do my best. We have got evidences, excel sheets/bank statements/notarised papers/photos etc., of a local mp (known as a mla in some countries). Here is the main issue, all the info is in his personal computer in his office and somehow that computer is connected (via networking I suppose) to the other computers in his office. His office has 4 computers, each computer has its own monochrome laser printer and a hp deskjet 2331 printer. Due to security reasons the guys who have access to the computer room cannot take their devices in, phones/drives etc., but noone checks the print outs that they take with them as they usually do that because the mp/mla is involved in consultancy and real estate businesses also. They take out like hundreds of prints per day.

Coming to the point, we want to submit all the evidences to the AG's office and to the other anti corruption wacthdogs but the guy who works there is not willing to mail or upload everything on a cloud because he fears that the IT team might come to know about it. Now we don't want him to be tracked using Machine Indetifier code or Tracking dots en.wikipedia.org/... Whistleblowers have been caught using this www.rollingstone.com/...

Few questions-

- Do monochrome laser printers (I know they can't but need to confirm) and colored inkjet/deskjet (are these both the same?) printers leave these tracking dots and mic? or is this issue only with colored laser printers?

- Say colored prints are taken from this hp deskjet printer and then the same page is copied, which will be basically scan and copy then will the dots be there? It will take 2x the time and cartridges though.

- What if the prints are taken on a yellow/yellowish paper, will the tracking dots and mic be identified then?

- Is there any way to disable the tracking dots and mic being printed? I could only find this option github.com/... but the guy who works there won't be able to install this on the system.

- Say we tell him to take any random print from that printer, then is there any way to check at home whether this printer actually leaves dots or mic behind? Without buying an expensive microscope or scanner?

- If the image printing quality is decreased or kept at normal level then will it still leave the dots and mic behind?

Of the little what is mentioned on the internet, printer oem's keep on changing the positing of these dots and mic. Some articles say that they only decipher it when Uncle Sam requests it or when there is a national security threat, both will not be the case here but a corrupt politician with unlimited power and money you never know so asking this. This is a good read too but the list is not updated www.eff.org/...

Thanks

Hello,

So I'm only familiar with the current "yellow dots" method from color laser printers. The original purpose was also that one would like to prosecute forgers of documents.

As far as I know, ink printers and monochrome printers do not have this. It is certainly conceivable that information of any kind could be hidden quite well with color printing. With pure black and white printing, this will certainly be more difficult, since you can see the dots faster and you also have less opportunity to "hide".

According to the previous implementation, the date and the serial number are encoded. Both of these would be information with which one can certainly understand large copiers reasonably well, since such devices are usually delivered through contracts with specialist dealers.

With smaller printers (especially ink) it looks a little different. Of course, it is also possible to hide information of any kind. I just don't know anything about it here.

The yellow dots should be lost with a normal copy. In B/W mode anyway.

The approach of the TU Dresden is interesting and should help "against" the yellow dots. But these are just color lasers. You can quickly see whether your printer uses such a method if you take a magnifying glass. Alternatively, you can also scan a print with a higher resolution and then play with the contrast controls there.

I won't be able to help you here. I have no indication that there are other tracking methods outside of the yellow dots. I'm sorry.

You might ask the TU Dresden.

Thanks for replying Ronny.

Why do you think that the ink and monochrome printers don't have this tracking thing? Is inkjet printer the same as a deskjet printer as posted in the original post?

The yellow dots should be lost with a normal copy. In B/W mode anyway.>>>> Not if the copy is a colored one?

Will a magnifying glass like this help? www.amazon.in/... or do we need a microscope like this www.amazon.in/... ? Don't have a high resolution scanner with us unfortunately.

Do you have any email addresses or know a way as in how to contact the authors of this reserach dl-acm-org.translate.goog/... ?

This thread says A more reliable way would be to choose a printer that doesn't even print the dots on the paper. These include ink printers or simple black and white laser printers. Source- www-druckerchannel-de.translate.goog/... This is giving an impression that the colored inkjet printer shouldn't leave any dots. Should it be edited?

The "Yellow Dot" methodology is quite easy to recognize. A normal scanner with 600 dpi or a normal thread counter is sufficient.

The yellow dot was also chosen because it is difficult to see with the naked eye. With a B/W printer, the dots would clearly be annoying.

"Deskjet" is a basic series of HP ink printers. These devices do not use the yellow dot technique.

I won't say with any certainty that there is no tracking technology, but I don't know of any.

Thanks for replying Ronny. What is a thread counter? I am looking for a device, check Amazon links which I posted in the earlier reply, which can help us know if there are indeed tracking dots or not? Don't have access to a scanner.

Is deskjet=inkjet?

Sorry for asking this, not asking for a certain answer, why do you think deskjet/inkjet series is not having the yellow dot technique? Are there any other tracking details besides the techniques mentioned here

www-druckerchannel-de.translate.goog/...

www-druckerchannel-de.translate.goog/...

The above mentioned links talk only about colored laser printers only

"HP Deskjet" printers are always ink printers. As said. Yellow dots are "only" found on many color laser printers. I don't know of any ink printers.

I don't know any other techniques either, it is possible or even imaginable that there is something there.

Does the Deskjet not have a scanner?

Thanks for replying Ronny. So, the same scanner will work for 600dpi? Sorry I didn't know that, will ask for a scanned copy. Does this printer save any infor or logs about the previous print jobs?
von
I don't know which Deskjet model you're using. You may be able to see rough information (file names) on the last print jobs. To do this, type the IP of the printer into a browser. The keyword is EWS (embedded web server)

@budze
It's hp deskjet 2331 printer. Can the previous print jobs or logs be reset after the printing?
von
This is a very simple USB printer. You won't be able to see a list of print jobs afterwards. It doesn't have a yellow dot either. A magnifying glass or scanner will not help you.

IF the device performs encoding of personal data, then we do not know the methodology.

If you have a clue, then you would have to see for yourself whether that is the case. e.g. take 2 same or similar printers from different places and do something rather simple printing and then compare the points at microscopic level :)

So: no yellow dot on this HP. I can't rule out that the Indian devices are different, but the methodology is very striking.
