Hi everyone,

I would like to apologise in advance: I understand German but don't master it good enough to write it. Please answer in German if it is more comfortable for any of you.

I've been printing pictures with my ip8500 for some years now. Printing blue skies or smooth blue areas has been a (small) problem ever since actually. Recently it became worse and my prints are not useable at the moment. I'll describe my hardware setup, workflow and problems...maybe someone can shed some light on this.

Hardware setup and workflow:

- camera's: Canon EOS 400D and 7D
- RAW processing: Adobe camera raw
- after ACR: resizing in PS CS5, convert to 8-bit file
- Send to Canon IP8500 driver in a fully color managed workflow with custom printer profile (eye 1 and Profilemaker)
- Print with Canon IP8500 with OCP inks in CLI-8 cartrdiges refilled using the "German method" on Sihl glossy paper (microporous)

I'm 100% sure the nozzles are not clogged. Both the standard nozzle check and the extended one from the service menu are perfect. Last week I cleaned the head overnight with a isopropanol/ammonia/glycerol/H2O mixture, but no improvement. The whole printer has been cleaned, timing strips are clear and the pumps are working perfectly. I recently switched from hobbicolors to OCP ink and have the feeling the problem got worse. I also noticed that the Photo Paper Pro setting in the driver gives huge banding problems and Photo Paper Plus Glossy is better. This was not only for the IP8500 but also for the IP5200 I had before...and replaced for the exact same problem: banding in blue areas.

Some pictures to ilustrate the problem:

img34.imageshack.us/...

This is the full A4 print made with OCP ink, Sihl paper and the highest quality Photo Paper Plus Glossy setting. Dark banding is clearly visible in the dark sky.

img171.imageshack.us/...

Enhanced detail of the same print the show the dark banding problem.

After investing quite a lot of money in new paper and ink supplies I really can't afford a new printhead. It seems that cyan is a problem for the Canon printers as my IP5200 suffered from the same problem. What I can't understand is that these problems show up despite a perfect nozzle check. The printhead doesn't seem the culprit here although I'm sure I'll have perfect pictures when I replace it: Any help or advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot and many greetings,
Wim

please, to have a start with the issue, print the standard nozzle test, scan it and add it here as a .jpg file with your next entry. I assume that the banding goes in direction of the printhead movement. ? the different paper settings may go with different numbers of overprint cycles more or less covering up the imperfect areas. What ist the usage of the printer , has it been used heavily ? Does the effect as well appear on normal paper ? What happens if you would print a big bar with the length of A4 and 2 - 5 cm wide, in cyan, does the banding change, increase over the length of the page ? There are at this time probably several possibilities to explain the origin of the banding, one could be insufficient ink flow in the cartridge which is typical when refilling the ink chamber but not soaking the foam pad in the cartridge as well which can be done easily when retracting the needle.

Thanks for the answer. I'll post the nozzle check when I get home this evening. I can guarantee you, however, it looks absolutely perfect even with 3 overprints over the same area.

The banding follows the direction of the printhead indeed. It's not visible on normal office paper. If I print a cyan bar going from maximum saturated cyan to white it appears in a certain tonal area. The printhead is aligned manually for the Sihl photo paper (could this have any effect?)

The printhead printed around 500 A4 pictures and is used regulary. The refilled cartridges look to be fully saturated...

Any other ideas?
Thanks!

O.k., let's wait for the nozzle test, no overprint etc just a single one. Canon printheads have different rows of nozzles for the different droplet sizes, for normal paper only the bigger drops are used, so it could be a problem with the fine nozzles, or the ink supply in the cartridge is impaired by air. This would show on an even colored box/bar , no gradient, with the effect becoming more prominent to the end of the print.

- andere papiere, andere tinte?

Guys,

First of all, the nozzle check. Sorry, no scanner here so I took a snapshot with a point and shoot camera. I know the quality isn't the best, but there is nothing to see on it. Supersmooth in every color, no lines or any strange thing...and I have good eyesight ;)

I also tried the solid cyan bar (21x4cm in the travel direction of the head)... and guess what: banding. The banding is there on the end of the paper and in the beginning, but its somethimes a bit stronger sometimes a bit weaker. The really strange thing: I tried a very cheap, non RC photopaper and...zero banding issues. Could this be a paper caused thing? I always used Sihl 280g glossy paper and was really satisfied...

What do you guys think?

o.k., the nozzle check shows in my opinion that there is no problem with the printhead as such, the IP8500 with green and red is quite an unusual printer configuration in this class. You state there is no banding with non RC photopaper, but was is the paper setting in the driver - did you change anything for that paper type ? The paper itself has no connection to the printer and could influence the ink droplets but the question is which changes you can observe with different driver/paper/quality settings in the driver, I would assume that this pronounced banding is even visible on normal paper - with a photo paper setting in the driver, the colors may look duller but the banding is probably still visible. I still have another thing in mind (because I had similar problems some time ago), the ink flow in the Cartridge may be impaired when refilling. Please try to saturate the foam pad in the cartridge by injecting some ink into it with the needle at about the middle of the foam, push the syringe slowly until the ink drops from the outlet of the cartrigde (take precautions for spoiling ink)

Thanks for the tips. Will try it :)

No paper is sitting in my printer, except some cheap copy paper I use to print something besides photo's (very rarely used). I used the exact same setting for both paper types (Photo Paper Plus Glossy) and the banding is not visible on the cheap paper, but it is visible on Sihl Glossy 280g. Both the cheap paper and Sihl paper have the same thickness...

The photo paper pro setting shows even more bandin, but this is reported by other people as well. I can't use any other settings as they do not use the 8 colours and I have no profiles made for them.
