Canon printers have very good hidden container for waste ink deposits. If the error message something like „Waste ink container is nearly full, contact your Canon service“ appears you have to do something until the printer will stop printing definitively.
You can do:
A. Contact the Canon service and send the printer to the service. It is correct (you will not loose your warranty), but expensive and time consuming solution.
B. Reset waste ink container sensor. It works very well, but after some time the waste ink will flow out of the container and you will have the ink everywhere.
C. Reset the sensor and clean the ink container. It is the best but not very easy solution.
B. Reset of the waste ink container sensor procedure:
I found it somewhere on internet and it works:
1. Turn off the printer - POWER button.
2. Press and hold the RESUME button, then press and hold the POWER button.
3. Release the RESUME button. Important - you have to be still holding the POWER button.
4. Press and release the RESUME button two (2) more times in succession. The printer's carriage will “reset" or move momentarily.
5. If the above was properly performed the printer will enter the "Service Mode".
6. Press the RESUME button 4 times, this will select the clear waste ink counter function. The LED will change its color with each key press.
7. Press the POWER button once (1) to "set" the change.
8. Press the POWER button again to restart the printer.
Note: Printer prints, but the ink container can be nearly full and after some time of printing might the ink flow out of the container. In reality, the situation is not so bad. I suppose, if you are the "general" - not excessive printer, the container will never overflow.
C. Cleaning the waste ink container (Canon Pixma IP2000 only):
I did it in this way with good result – no malfunction or damage to the printer. Sides of the printer are marked according to your hands when you are standing in front of the printer looking on it.
Reset the waste ink container – follow the procedure „B“.
Remove the black side panels. At the bottom there are 3 clips marked with arrows.
Open and remove the black front door, start from the left side. Be careful, do not brake it.
Remove the small side panel from the left side. There is one „hidden“ clip under the front door and one large one on the top of the panel.
Remove the small side panel from the right side. Do not damage wires.
Remove top cover of the printer. There are two (2) clips on the back side and two (2) other on the left and right side of the printer. Be careful - do not brake it.
At the right side of the printer you can see part of the ink container filled with black colored sponge. Take the sponge out, rinse it carefully with the clean water and dry it. Use instruments or disposable gloves.
Make approximately 15 mm wide hole to the side panel of the printer. Use saw or other suitable instrument. Be careful – do not damage wires.
Take remained sponges out. Be careful, do not damage draining tubes and sensor. Longer instrument like screwdriver or pencil can help you. Wash it with water and dry it. I used for drying exhauster and ventilator with heating.
There are 7 peaces of sponge – one small + 2 large for the central part and four long ones for the back part of the container.
Unlock the print head, move it to the left.
Press the lever next to the left side of the print head to release it.
Remove two small sponges (plastic porous plates) and clean carefully all assembly. Replace small sponges, move the print head to its original position.
Replace dry sponges to the container. You need not to tape (fix) the last two pieces of long sponges with the tape.
Close the new window with the tape and reassemble the printer.
The next time you can take only the right back side panel off, Take off the tape, remove and clean the central part of the sponges without large disassembling the printer.
