This test compares two all-in-one devices which use different printing technologies: HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless AIO (with ink cartridges), costing round about 400 Euros, and Samsung CLX-3175FW (with toner cartridges) for about 500 Euros.

Costs Of Consumables

Exchange of cartridges is easy with both AIOs. In addition, Samsungs printer needs exchange of waste-toner container and imaging drum after a certain number of prints. Exchange is easy as well.

Consumables: HP

The preceeding cartridges (Nr. 88) contain dye-ink. The most recent follow-up cartridges Nr. 940 are filled with pigmented ink. They only fit into two printers (AIO Officejet Pro 8500 and printer Officejet Pro 8000).

HPs Officejet solely requires four ink-cartridges (88,50 Euros altogether). The print heads (two) are supposed to last a printer`s life.

HP delivers it´s AIO with ink cartridges with low yield. You can buy the three cartridges with colors in an XL version only (high yield). The black cartridge is available with low and high yield (XL).

Ink cartridges No. 940: Four with high yield (XL). Print heads are numbered 940 as well and are supposed to last a printer´s life.

Consumables: Samsung

Samsung had small toner-kegs before in preceeding printers, and has returned to normal toner-cartridges now. Waste toner container and imaging drum are new, as well. They only can be used for the new series CLX-3170/3175 models and printer CLP-310/315.

Consumables which have to be exchanged are

• Ink cartridges (185 Euros)
• Waste toner container (10 Euros)
• Imaging drum (136 Euros)

Consumables in Samsungs AIO: If you decide for Samsungs allrounder, four ink cartridges, imaging drum, and waste toner container have to be exchanged.
