There were few exhibitors on Frankfurt´s Paperworld this year. In spite of that, exciting news have been heard on this fair.

New Canon-Chip is cracked

Lots of companies abstained from showing up in Frankfurt. Just Brother and Xerox turned up as OEM´s on-site.

Among the most important manufacturers of compatibles, KMP, Jettec (DCI), Peach (3T), and Ninestar were present.

A compatible chip for new Canon Pixma printers with these ink cartridges (PGI-520BK, CLI-521BK, CLI-521C, CLI-521M, and CLI-521Y) was announced as most important news. Jettec´s sales Manager, Robert Kain, showed first prototypes to us.

The cartridges are expected to be deliverable in March. DC assumes that other suppliers of compatible cartridges like KMP and Pelikan will follow suit. As producers of the chip, Pelikan, Apex (China), and Static Control come into consideration.

Good news for retailers with little storage space come from Jettec: From now on the wrappings will be smaller by one third (picture right side).

Peach with small booth

Alfred Wirch, CEO (Peach), told us how frustrating he thinks the market situation with printing accessories is: Absurd patents and registered designs of the OEM´s give sellers of compatibles a hard time.

As an example Wirch mentioned the HP-Nr.-364-cartridges (Single-ink-cartridges, as for a HP Photosmart D5460). The chip on this cartridge is heavily encoded, it seems almost impossible to crack the code.

Aside from that the chip is mounted on the cartridge in a way it is barely possible to remove the chip without destroying the printed circuits.

Canon´s Pixma printers have a rugged circuit board, rebuilding it is common practice and no problem for Canon-refillers.

As a "hit" Peach showed a small thermal binder, supposed to cost approximately 15 Euros. It binds up to 30 photographs (10 by 15 centimetres) into an album with a front and a back cover.

Ninestar: Plans to produce own printer?

Rumours are flying thick and fast after the Chinese lost several appeals in the US. It is now prohibited to import infringing new and refilled cartridges resembling Epson´s. Ninestar is fed up with all the trouble and is planning to present a printer itself.

Rumors have it that Lenovo is supposed to build the hardware.

Whether or not this printer will appear in the European market is rather improbable. DC suspects this printer will be produced for the Asian market only.

KMP with biggest booth

The biggest booth by far had KMP-Printtechnik-AG. According to Executive Manager Heinz G. Sieg, KMP is second in the German market after Pelikan. That is possible only with consistently good quality, says Sieg. Currently KMP is building a factory for toner modules in the Czech Republic, which will be completed in March. Sieg plans to increase production of toner cartridges up to 700.000 p.a. "Whoever prints with a color laser, can buy KMP-cartridges with polymere-toner, if this type of toner is offered by the OEM", says Sieg.

Other manufacturers are believed to often put ordinary grinded toner in their cartridges, even if chemically grown toner (polymer-toner) belongs into the cartridges.
