Ink Cartridges
They contain an ink reservoir and a sponge. The sponge compartment has an opening on the bottom side. From there the ink flows to the print head.
To avoid negative pressure due to ink usage the sponge compartment has a small hole on the upper side to allow air to flow in.
On the bottom side of the ink reservoir you find a transparent inspection window with a prism for an optical check of the filling level.
The filling level of the cartridges is determined digitally. A chip on the lower side of the cartridge stores the filling level and complicates refilling. The use of refilled and 3rd party cartridges is hampered as well.
Just as Canon printers do it you can continue printing when the chip finds, the cartridge is empty. A corresponding message has to be confirmed, and there is no display of the filling level, until you insert a new original ink cartridge. The use of "empty" and 3rd party cartridges is stored in the printer.
Hewlett Packard offers the ink cartridges for it´s D5460-printer with two capacities. The cartridges No. 364, which are included in the scope of supply, contain distinctly less ink than the ones with high yield, which are sold by HP as 364 XL.

The main difference between full and low capacity cartridges is the filling level of the ink reservoir. With low capacity cartridges this reservoir contains no ink, it is only in the sponge.
