Looking at Hewlett-Packard’s new Photosmart D5469, it seems to be a common HP-printer. But if you take a closer look, you will find a completely new technology, which strongly resembles Canon’s Pixma iP4500. In this test, DC is going to examine, whether or not it can compare to Canon’s successful Pixma iP4500.

What´s inside

There are some innovations in HP´s D5460.

It seems to us HP borrowed the ink system (five ink tanks) and the permanent print head from Canon´s Pixma series. HP´s ink tanks look similar to Canon´s.

Both companies deny collaboratoring in designing the tanks.

The permanent print head can be easily removed. You just have to open the print head lock lever.

There are more features both printers have in common. For the first time a HP printer comes with two different droplet sizes. For each color there is one row of nozzles for a droplet size of 5.2 picoliters, another for 1.3 picoliters. Just like Canon´s Pixmas, the nozzles for text black have a bigger droplet size to speed up text print.

As an innovation we find an additional photo black ink. Ink printers using pigmented black ink have to commingle all colors to create black when printing photos. This doesn´t apply when a photo black ink cartridge is used. The "genuine" black also generates higher contrast.
