Test: HP Photosmart D5460

Looking at Hewlett-Packard’s new Photosmart D5469, it seems to be a common HP-printer. But if you take a closer look, you will find a completely new technology, which strongly resembles Canon’s Pixma iP4500. In this test, DC is going to examine, whether or not it can compare to Canon’s successful Pixma iP4500.

Smeartest and water resistance

To test durability of the ink DC prints this document (to the right) on plain copy paper in normal quality without a change in the driver.

You can find the file we use here: Testdokumente.

Highlighter test

Immediately after print out DC highlights a text line. The amount of smear can be seen in the scan below.

When marking text printed by the D5460 the pigmented black ink shows smear.

Water resistance

In the middle of a colored rhumb the lab puts a droplet of water. It stays there to evaporate. This way we can assess, whether or not the ink is water resistant.

HP´s Vivera inks, which are used in the D5460, get no good marks in this test. The inks trickle off immediately, when coming in contact with water.

If you need entirely smear- and waterproof prints on plain paper, there´s only Epson for the time being with their model Epson Stylus DX8400 or their new Stylus Office B40W.
