Firmware-change on the sly shall make low budged cartridges unusable
The word is that Epson has changed the firmware on the sly in some inkjet printers like the Epson Stylus D78.
The result is that customers can’t use the cheaper third party cartridges anymore. The new firmware, which is said to be in the market since April 2007, shall reject those cartridges.
John Studholme, Managing director at Jettec in England, told Druckerchannel, that Jettec has already assembled functional chips for the new firmware. How retailers and customers can get those new Jettec cartridges will be cleared during the next days.
Druckerchannel will do some test acquisitions at various mail order companies and buy both low budget cartridges and the cartridges of some well-known brands as Pelikan, Inktec, Jettec, KMP, Artech and Geha and subsequently test the function of the cartridges in the new Epson printers.
