Comparative Test: Eleven multifunction printers

In this test DC evaluates eleven AIO´s in a price range from 90 to 300 Euros. Differences in layout, speed of print, and, most of all, cost of print are huge. DC assists in choosing the appropriate AIO.

Light resistance

Our lab tests, how much color prints on photo-paper bleach out when exposed to light. To accomplish that, we use the checking device "Atlas Suntest XLS+". The prints are exposed to its xenon-lamp for 72 hours.

Comparing the "before" and "after" pictures you will see the difference between prints generated with dye-ink or pigmented ink. The latter have considerably less problems with bleaching.

Both Epson printers and the Kodak AIO are using pigmented ink. The rest utilizes dye-ink. The heaviest bleaching can be found with Lexmark´s printer.

The test is done on photo-paper the manufacturer recommends.

Brother DCP-165C: Left side before, right side after the test. Colors remain stable.

Brother MFC-790CW: Left side before, right side after the test. Almost no bleaching.

Canon Pixma MP490: Left side before, right side after the test. The photo is definitely paler than before the test.

Canon Pixma MP560: Left side before, right side after the test. The somewhat painty photo has a definite bleach.

Canon Pixma MP640: Left side before, right side after the test. Visible bleaching, with rather benefical effect to the photo.

Epson Stylus SX510W: Left side before, right side after the test. Both Epsons use pigmented inks, almost no bleaching.

Epson Stylus Office BX610FW: Left side before, right side after the test. The Epson prints with almost no loss of quality.

HP Photosmart C4680: Left side before, right side after the test. Only close inspection reveals unsignificant differences.

HP Photosmart Premium Fax C309a: Left side before, right side after the test. HP-printer with almost no bleaching.

Kodak ESP 5250: Left side before, right side after the test. The Kodak printer uses pigmented ink, consequently almost no bleaching.

Lexmark Impact S305: Left side before, right side after the test. Definitely heaviest bleaching in this test.
